Clyde Wijnhard could become the latest striker to be given the chance to win a contract at the Stadium of Light after sources in Lancashire insisted that the former Oldham player has emerged as a target for Sunderland.
The Dutchman, looking for a new club after being released by the Portuguese outfit Beira Mar, had been expected to rejoin the Latics, having spent the summer training at Boundary Park.
But with the move having hit a snag yesterday, Oldham insisted that the 30-year-old is planning to hold talks with an unnamed Swedish club this weekend before heading to Wearside to discuss a move with Black Cats' officials.
"Clyde has informed (the Oldham manager) Brian Talbot that he will travel to Sweden on Saturday to speak to a club there and that he is also set to meet with Sunderland on Monday," the League One club revealed in a brief statement.
McCarthy has cast his net far and wide in his search for striking talent but has yet to be convinced by any of the string of trialists to have tried their luck at the Academy of Light in recent weeks. French target-man Julien Poueys is the latest player to depart Wearside, having failed to win a move.
The well-travelled Wijnhard, whose English clubs include Leeds, Huddersfield and Preston, scored eight goals for Beira Mar in the Portuguese top flight last term. But a player who has only recently recovered from a troublesome knee problem has failed to win a new contract under coach Mick Wadsworth and is keen to find himself a new employer as quickly as possible.
