SUNDERLAND star Dwight Yorke could return to Australia this summer with the Central Coast Mariners.
Yorke, 37 in November, is out of contract at the end of the season and may also attract interest from Sydney FC, the club he left to join the Black Cats in 2006.
Mariners executive chairman Lyall Gorman will meet with Yorke’s Australian-based manager Paul Masluck on Wednesday.
“We’ll sit down and chew the fat and see where Dwight is at with his career. Is he one who we could afford? We’ll see what the story is with him,” Gorman said.
And Yorke hasn’t ruled out a return to Sydney, despite suggestions he left under a cloud when Roy Keane and Sunderland came calling.
“I’ve kept tabs on Sydney and I’ve got some good friends at the club,” he said. “I’d never rule out Sydney or the rest of Australia because I enjoyed my time there – but at this point in time I have to consider all the options available to me.”
Yorke added: “I didn’t want to leave Sydney, but when Roy Keane came calling I felt that was another challenge in itself; since then I’ve gone on to great things at Sunderland.
“We won the Championship and now we’re in the Premiership whilst Sydney have stood still. I’ve got great affection for Sydney but they might not want me back, so who knows?”
Yorke, however, has not ruled out convincing former Manchester United team-mate Keane to hand him a new one-year contract at the Stadium of Light.
