Anthony Stokes says he has learned his lesson after his run-ins with Roy Keane this season. The £2m Sunderland striker was given a public dressing-down by boss Keane after he, along with team-mates Tobias Hysen and Marton Fulop, missed the team bus to Barnsley in March. The team set off to Oakwell without the latecomers but, after being spoken to by Keane a couple of days later, they were soon back in the fold - although Stokes is believed to have pushed his luck with Keane on a couple of occasions since. But the 19-year-old, who scored in Sunderland's 5-0 win at Luton on the final day of the season, insists he will learn from his mistakes. He said: "There are one or two things I would change, decisions I made and things that I regret - like missing that bus - but you have to learn from these things and move on. Once you learn, that's the important thing. "It's been up and down a bit to be honest. I had one or two upsets with Roy Keane but that's been put aside now and he's been fine about it. "After missing the bus, Roy called me into the office, sat down and said that was the end of the situation and it was forgotten about." Former Arsenal man Stokes is currently with the Republic's Under-19 squad taking part in the Elite Qualifying Phase of the European Under-19 Championships. The Republic take on Bulgaria tonight, Germany on Wednesday and Hungary on Saturday. Stokes is due to link up with the senior Republic side at the end of the week for their end-of-season tour to America but will remain with the Under-19s for at least the first two games, and possibly the third too if Ireland have a chance of topping their group. If Ireland win their group, they will compete in the tournament finals in Austria in July. Meanwhile, the transfer rumour mill went into overdrive at the weekend with Sunderland linked with a clutch of players. Midfielder Neil Lennon, who is a free agent when his contract with Celtic expires this summer, has been linked with a move to Wearside and says that he is interested in a switch. Lennon said: "Sunderland would appeal to me greatly, but it's only hearsay at the moment." Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler and Middlesbrough defender Abel Xavier, both of whom are out of contract this summer, have also been mentioned. Keane was at yesterday's Championship play-off semi-final between Wolves and West Brom, leading to speculation that he was running the rule over Baggies defender Paul McShane. McShane is a former club-mate of Keane's at Manchester United. |
