ROY KEANE has decided against signing his ex-team-mate Quinton Fortune.
Former Manchester United man Fortune spent several weeks training with Sunderland at the Academy of Light in December and January.
And the South Africa international was given the chance to impress at the end of last month in a training ground friendly against Bradford City, when he set up one of Sunderland’s goals in a 4-4 draw.
But Black Cats boss Keane said: “Quinton left the club last week. We just felt that he wasn’t the right option for us at the moment.
“Quinton is a great lad but, in the position we are in, I think it would be unfair to bring in player who hasn’t played for six, seven or eight months.
“We did that with Andy Cole and Ian Harte earlier in the season, but at this stage of the campaign anyone we bring in needs to be able to hit the ground running.
“I think Quinton might now spend some time with Blackburn and we wish him well.”
