Door still open for Liam

Mar 2 2008

by Darren Kelso, Sunday Sun

ROY KEANE says tardy Liam Miller may still have time to save his Sunderland career.

Liam Miller

Midfielder Miller was transfer-listed last week after Keane tired of the Republic of Ireland international turning up late for training.

Miller’s agent claims the player was not deliberately late and was simply delayed in traffic three times in the space of a week.

Keane is in no mood for excuses – but he has held out the prospect of Miller working his way back into his good books . . . if his timekeeping improves.

Keane said: “I’ve put Liam on the list and we’ll see how he reacts now. I wouldn’t say he has no chance at all of staying here.

“There is still a chance for him if he can be on time but if he can’t, then it would be unfair on the other players for him to stay.”

Keane is clearly hoping that the transfer-listed player – who he rates highly – regards the move as a final warning.

However, Miller’s agent Eamon McLoughlin feels that his client has been harshly treated . . . but insists that he wants to stay at Sunderland.

“The implication is that Liam is indisciplined, not fully committed to his job at Sunderland,” he said. “I do not want to start a public row with the manager, but I can’t let that pass.

“Liam is not unprofessional, in 18 months at the club Liam has been late seven times – most are by a matter of minutes.

“We have to accept the manager’s decision but Liam’s disappointed – not least because it damages his reputation in the eyes of fans at Sunderland and beyond.”

Miller made his comeback from a calf injury in the reserves at Bolton in midweek in front of Keane and the manager admitted that his former Manchester United colleague was one of Sunderland’s best players.

But that will not stop Keane from moving him on this summer if he does not get the message.

Keane said: “He is a very important player for us. But I have to look at the bigger picture and be fair to the other players at this football club.

“It’s got nothing to do with Liam’s ability, but it takes more than talent to be a top footballer.”

With the transfer window closed until the summer, Miller will stay on Wearside unless Sunderland allow him to join a Championship side on loan but, given the Black Cats’ injury problems, that seems unlikely.

He is one of eight players now on the transfer list, along with Stanislav Varga, Graham Kavanagh, Ross Wallace, David Connolly, Ian Harte, Stephen Wright and Greg Halford.
