Hughton may well have not been the people’s choice as boss of Newcastle in the aftermath of the Magpies’ relegation, but after pulling off a remarkable job since taking charge on July 1, the former Republic of Ireland international has led the black and whites to the top of the table on a shoestring budget.
Harper added: “Chris has come through it with flying colours.
“He’s concentrated on the job on the pitch when it’s needed to be done. But he can also rattle cages when that’s needed.
“And we have seen a few examples of it already this season.”
Harper and the remainder of the Newcastle squad who aren’t on international duty, are determined not to resume their second tier campaign in the same manner they returned from the October break.
Back then a disappointing loss at Nottingham Forest was followed up with a second consecutive defeat at Championship strugglers Scunthorpe United.
Harper and Co, though, hit back to record three consecutive wins, the last being a 3-1 win over Peterborough that cost Darren Ferguson his job.
Harper added: “After the last period we started badly with a little blip which included a couple of poor results. But we’ve bounced back to finish with three wins and everybody has a good feeling.”
