NEWCASTLE United’s bewildered troops underwent the first day of a gruelling, week-long “boot camp” style training regime in Dublin by waking at the crack of dawn.
With caretaker boss Chris Hughton in charge, the programme saw United begin a training schedule that sees them put through their paces THREE times a day.
The programme was actually drawn up by Alan Shearer during his short tenure in charge before Mike Ashley decided to sell up and leave the Toon legend in limbo.
United started at 7am this morning – and this was due to be followed by sessions three hours later and again at around 4pm this afternoon.
United are staying at Carton House in Kildare in the Eire capital ahead of their first friendly of the summer against Shamrock Rovers on July 11.
But while the luxurious surroundings of the country hotel offer a wide range of leisure activities, including fishing, tennis, golf and a snooker hall, Hughton will try to adopt some of Shearer’s workmanlike principles.
Hughton told the Chronicle from Dublin today: “We’re going to a training camp to get away and work in a different environment.
“I think it’ll be good for the players.
“What they will do in Ireland is work very, very hard.
“They’ll spend a lot of time together, and that will be valuable time as a group.
