NEWCASTLE United have won promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt. Never will a 0-0 draw 200 miles away be celebrated quite like it was on Tyneside after Nottingham Forest failed to win against Cardiff City to send the Magpies into the top flight. For Newcastle United fans their "season in the wilderness" as they named it ended with promotion back to the top tier of English football in dramatic scenes which consumed the city on Bank Holiday Monday. Thousands of supporters had earlier streamed to St James' Park for the highly-anticipated match against Sheffield United. But with Nottingham Forest only managing a draw at the City Ground in the evening kick-off, the champagne corks were popping before Newcastle even took to the field. Story continues ADVERTISEMENT Jamie Hall, 26, a telecommunications worker from Heaton, Newcastle, said: "We've all dreamed of this day. "I hope everyone who said Newcastle would fall like a stone is watching Tyneside now. "We're back where I believe we belong. Newcastle have taken the Championship by storm and we're everyone's cup final. That says a lot." Fans continued to celebrate long into the night, especially after the Toon players secured a hard-fought 2-1 win over Sheffield United.
