Chris Hughton was more than satisfied with the arrival of Best from Coventry City after making him his sixth signing of the transfer window.
Hughton’s well-documented chase for Jermaine Beckford proved fruitless last month, but at 23 Best has his best years ahead of him.
Hughton said: “What people forget is that Leon is a young player. He’s got the hunger to succeed and this is a fantastic opportunity for him.”
Now with Cardiff City up next for the Magpies on Friday night at St James’ Park, with a huge following from South Wales set to bolster what will be a lively weekend atmosphere, Best can’t wait to get his teeth into his new role.
He told me: “It’s all to play for and we’ve got 19 games left to finish off this job.
“What we’ve got is a big squad and we’ve got massive players throughout.
