NEWCASTLE United, delighted with their acquisition of Jonas Gutierrez, are eyeing a couple of other Real Mallorca players.
The Chronicle can reveal that Kevin Keegan sent his lieutenant Terry McDermott to watch the Spanish outfit in action in their 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns at the weekend.
The word coming out of The Midlands is that Terry Mac was spotted, along with Reserve team coach Adam Sadler, and that it was unlikely there anybody in the West Brom side who would interest United.
But I understand that Kevin Keegan was very impressed with two of the Real Mallorca side after last week’s Summer Cup competition in Palma.
Keegan rushed through his post-match Press conference after United had been beaten 1-0 by Hertha Berlin on the Friday night so that he could watch as much as possible of the Real Mallorca-Hannover game which followed.
Keegan will obviously have talked to Gutierrez about the two Mallorca players who have caught his eye and possibly even Fabricio Coloccini from an opponents’ point of view after his time with Deportivo La Coruna in La Liga.
The Majorca Summer Cup was not a success, with attendances rock bottom while United turned in a couple of dreary displays against Hertha Berlin and Real Mallorca.
So it would certainly be ironic if United were to get something out of it in the signing of one or two Real Mallorca players.
Meanwhile. Keegan’s summer-long search for a left-back goes on and it remains to be seen whether the Portuguese trialist from Boavista impresses.
But new Blackburn Rovers boss Paul Ince is continuing to dig his heels in about his left-back Stephen Warnock, who fancies a move to St James’s.
Ince has already seen David Bentley and Brad Friedel head out of the door since he arrived at Ewood Park, and he said: “I can say 100% that nobody else will be leaving.”
Meanwhile, Aston Villa are the latest club to be linked with a move for United striker Alan Smith.
FOLLOWING last season’s successful open day, when 12,000 fans turned up at St James’s Park, United will repeat the venture tomorrow.
The Sir John Hall stand will be open from 9.30am, while club members can use the East Stand.
And at 10.30am Kevin Keegan and the United squad will undergo a full training session on the pitch. Former United favourite John Beresford will compere the proceedings.
