Andy Carroll: Siege mentality can keep us top

Academy product Carroll has missed the last three games but is now hoping to get off the mark when he makes his return.

He told the Chronicle today: “There’s a run of games coming up now in the Championship and the Carling Cup.

“I just have to take it all as it comes.

“We don’t know what is happening with the club, all we need to do is stay together as players and work hard.

“Whether or not it’s the cup or the league, we just want to keep winning.

“We’ve got a group of lads here who just want to win football matches and take us back to the Premier League.

“We’ll just get on with the job.

“The side has been scoring goals in the Championship so everybody can be happy with that.”

Yet Carroll admits he feels for one of his strike partners in Ameobi, with the player facing a long stint on the sidelines with a foot injury.

And after suffering an injury himself, which split up their partnership after just three games this season, Carroll knows the rigours of the Championship have been highlighted pretty quickly for Toon fans.

He said: “Shola’s confidence was high after getting the goals.

“And it was working well between us.

“We know that every game is likely to be physical in the Championship.

“We know that we are going to have to work hard in every game.”

Now, though, Carroll is solely focused on getting fit for the Magpies and running out at the Cardiff City Stadium, where he feels Newcastle can keep up their great start.

He said: “Every team we have to play this season wants to make a name for themselves. That makes it extra tough.

“We need to stick together as a squad. If we do that we’ll keep picking up wins.”
