Newcastle may go for Goian AND Chimbonda
Jul 20 2008
by Neil Farrington, Sunday Sun
NEWCASTLE are considering a move for former Sunderland target Dorin Goian.
And their interest in another Black Cats’ would-be signing — Pascal Chimbonda — has been confirmed.
The Magpies’ executive director Dennis Wise and technical co-ordinator Jeff Vetere have told Romanian centre-half Goian that a switch to St James’s may be possible.
But the decision on whether to make a bid for the Steaua Bucharest stopper is in the hands of United manager Kevin Keegan.
Goian, 27 and pictured right, looked set to join Sunderland last week only for the Black Cats and Steaua to fail to agree a fee.
Dinamo Kiev, along with several Spanish clubs, are also on his trail.
Tottenham full-back Chimbonda has held talks with Sunderland and will “think about things for a few days” before deciding on a move to the Stadium of Light, according to his agent, Roger Boli.
But Boli confirmed that Newcastle and Everton have also made clear their interest in his man.
Meanwhile, United have told Aston Villa to forget about signing James Milner – unless they stump up £10 million. That is the seemingly prohibitive figure Villa were quoted last week when making the latest of several enquiries about the winger.
