CHRIS HUGHTON is set to hold showdown talks with Shola Ameobi after the Toon star revealed he wants to play for Nigeria at the African Cup of Nations.
Ameobi also wants to represent his native Nigeria in the World Cup finals next summer, but it is the January tournament in Angola that would provide Hughton with a major headache.
His participation for the Super Eagles in the competition that starts on January 10 would see Ameobi ruled out for potentially the whole month, with a pre-tournament training camp straight after FA Cup third-round day and the final taking place on January 31.
That would see Ameobi possibly miss the FA Cup first hurdle for the Mags and four Coca-Cola Championship games with a possible fourth-round date to come.
Key games against promotion rivals West Brom at home and a trip to Leicester City are coming up in January.
Hughton told the Chronicle today: “It’s one that that I intend to talk to Shola about very soon. I was only just made aware of it today.
“I will see what is thoughts are.
“My only concern at this moment is to make sure he is fit for Newcastle.
“We need him as soon as possible because he’s missed three months now after a really good start to the season. I want to see him producing for Newcastle.
“Shola is a good lad and a thoughtful lad, and if his thinking is that there is an opportunity to play at international level then I can understand it.”
