Sousa: Memory of Sir Bobby will live on forever

Nov 26 2009

by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle

Paulo Sousa

SIR BOBBY ROBSON’S memory will never fade away at St James’ Park, according to Paulo Sousa.

The Swansea boss admits that his visit to Gallowgate on Saturday will be tinged with emotion and will represent “closure” as he grieves the death of one of his mentors.

The former Portugal legend played under Sir Bobby at Sporting Lisbon.

Ahead of Newcastle United’s big clash with the Welsh side, Sousa said of Sir Bobby: “I hope his soul can come close to me and give me all the happiness and enthusiasm he always had.

“I remember how he was on the sidelines, the way he motivated his players and I hope it can inspire me at Newcastle.

“I feel him all the time and will never forget him. His spirit will be there and next to me all the time.

“Bobby was a big influence for me. I always keep him in my heart.

“I never forget what he did for me. He made me feel important and made me believe in myself.”

United have still to make a decision on whether to name the East Stand in Sir Bobby’s name but Sousa feels it would be a fitting tribute.

He says: “Bobby deserves to be a hero in world football. He always gave a lot and, even when he had problems with his health, there was still happiness in his face.

“He was always very charitable to everyone and would help anyone he could. He’s someone who can’t be forgotten in football.”

Sousa has won all the big prizes in football, with Serie A and Champions League gongs in his personal trophy cabinet, but beating Newcastle would be one of the proudest moments of his career according to the ex-Juventus and Inter Milan star.

He added: “We go to every game to win but we know Newcastle are the strongest opponents in the league at this moment. They belong in the Premier League.

“But we are in good form at the moment and they need to earn the points. They will need to be much better than us to get them.”
