Sky's the limit for Carroll after Scunthorpe brace

Mar 18 2010

by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle

Andy Carroll

ANDY CARROLL has admitted that the sky is the limit for Newcastle United’s in-form frontline as the race to be Magpies’ top scorer heats up.

Both the Geordie gem and great Dane Peter Lovenkrands were in superb form as they sent Scunthorpe United packing in an easy win – a result which means that United could be promoted by Easter.

And it looks like a three-way fight for the top scorer’s prize with Carroll, Lovenkrands, both on 14, and Kevin Nolan, on 13, leading the way.

However, Carroll feels that the service provided by playmakers like Danny Guthrie and Wayne Routledge means that a Newcastle player could push past the 20-goal mark for the first time since 2004, when Alan Shearer grabbed 28.

Carroll told the Chronicle: “I’d like to be top scorer, but if we keep winning that’s the most important thing. It would be a good to get that top scorer position, though, and that’s an aim as well.

“And if the quality of delivery stays the same, there is every chance of that.

“I keep saying if they keep playing balls in like that, I will keep on putting them away.

“I thought our movement throughout the team was brilliant.

“Myself and Peter worked well together up top and we tore them apart in their defence. They didn’t know where we were going to run next.

“In the first half it should have been more than two – it should have been five or six.”

Carroll left the field to a standing ovation when he came off with 16 minutes to go, and cut a disappointed figure as the Academy product had been searching for his hat-trick.

But Chris Hughton had an eye on the clash with Bristol City where he will need Carroll again at both ends of the pitch, with the Toon striker a prize asset these days.
