UNITED hero Shola Ameobi has claimed that one of his most important goals for Newcastle was a hit and hope effort.
Ameobi struck after coming off the bench last night to secure a vital 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest, which left Billy Davies well and truly resigned to the play-offs and Newcastle heading for the Coca-Cola Championship trophy.
Long-serving striker Ameobi has watched on in frustration from the sidelines for long periods of 2010 with shoulder and hamstring problems.
But that frustration evaporated into the wet Tyneside skies last night at St James Park.
He told the Chronicle today: Chris Hughton told us to be patient, and we would get chances.
Thankfully one fell to me, and Ive been able to put it through the defenders legs, and in off the post.
It felt so good. There was a lot of frustration there on my part. To be able to get that goal means a lot.
Its one of those things you just hit and hope!
Especially with it being on my weaker side, I just wanted to hit the target, and thankfully its gone in.
There was a lot of pent-up frustration. Injuries are something Ive had to deal with all my career, and unfortunately this season its been one thing after another.
I just had to stay positive, and hope I could help the team secure promotion.
