WAYNE Routledge has vowed to repay Chris Hughton for handing him a career lifeline and the chance to fly the flag for Newcastle United back in the Premier League.
The jet-heeled winger knows that Newcastle can seal promotion if they beat relegation-haunted Peterborough United on Saturday at London Road and Nottingham Forest fail at Bristol City.
Routledge is quickly turning into a favourite with United fans, and the one-time England prospect today spoke of his hunger to make an impact in the top flight and prove that Hughton’s judgement was spot on to hand him the chance to become a United hero.
Routledge, who has had three short-lived spells in the Premier League with Spurs, Aston Villa and Fulham, told the Chronicle today: “I have a lot of respect for Chris Hughton after he brought me here.
“He showed faith in me and he has kept doing that by playing me in games.
“You don’t forget that, and you want to keep on doing well.
“The boys have responded to his words all season.
“To not lose a game at home and just a handful away is a real tough achievement. When you consider that everybody wants to beat Newcastle, it’s amazing.
“But everybody here is geared up for it.
“Every player knows what we are trying to do and fingers crossed we’ll get there in the next few games.”
