NEWCASTLE club captain Nicky Butt feels that there would be no complaints from United’s players if Chris Hughton was appointed as manager until the end of the season.
The Chronicle understands United managing director Derek Llambias is due to review the positions of Chris Hughton and Colin Calderwood in due course following the Magpies’ flying start to life in the Coca-Cola Championship.
And the pair could be handed the responsibility of leading United until the end of the campaign after Hughton picked up consecutive manager of the month awards.
Butt told the Chronicle: “The team is showing there is belief here, and Chris and Colin deserve the job now.
“Hopefully they get it and that will mean we can all concentrate on the job in hand.
“People keep looking at us and say ‘they still haven’t got a proper manager’ even though Chris is acting manager.
“He’s not done anything wrong, but he hasn’t been named as boss.
“So it would be nice to see Chris get the job.”
United dropped four points in their last two home games against QPR and Bristol City, and now face three of their next four games on the road – starting at Nottingham Forest on Saturday night.
However, Butt is confident the team spirit is strong enough to carry his side through the next few tricky Championship assignments.
Staff at many clubs United have visited have been stunned by the party atmosphere blasting out of United’s dressing room – with each player having to nominate a track for away games before they are put together on CD and blared out via a sound system.
Butt added: “It’s something that we do now. We’ve all got our own songs and we play them before each game.
“If it’s a lucky song it keeps getting played – hopefully we’ll keep on doing it.”
