Harewood, who opened his account for Newcastle earlier this month against Queens Park Rangers, feels that his new team-mates went into life in the Coca-Cola Championship with a major point to prove. And that’s why – Blackpool aside – United have refused to give the majority of their opponents an inch. Players like Alan Smith, Kevin Nolan and Ryan Taylor this season have performed fantastically so far and Harewood said: “There are some very good players here. “They are established players, but they have a point to prove. “They want to get back up there and stay there. “They have all experienced the disappointment of last year and they don’t want to experience it again or be involved in a relegation battle. “They are knuckling down and looking really sharp.” Harewood played his first 90 minutes since April when United were left frustrated by Bristol City nine days ago. Now with a game against the club for whom he banged in 55 goals for in 196 games to look forward to, Harewood hopes it will mark the start of a run of consistency once again. He added: “I just can’t wait to start playing really. “I just want to get on the pitch and score goals. “I want to help the lads out to win football matches. “The team has been playing really well, so I have to show in training that I can go and do a job for them. “It’s my job to score some goals and bring something different to them. “I’ll hold the ball up and challenge for the ball and score goals.” :: Wallsend Boys' Club are holding their annual dinner on Thursday night at The Lancastrian Suite, Dunston.
