The manager’s most pressing bit of transfer business is to secure the signing of Danny Simpson on a permanent deal. The right-back is popular, young, humble and desperate to join Newcastle – so the only thing that would prevent it from happening is Ashley’s refusal to sanction the cash. With other Championship clubs monitoring his situation, United fans will be hoping the poker face that Hughton has shown in public regarding the young right-back is a bluff.
As for the rest of the loans, they have been something of a mixed bag.
Marlon Harewood may not have set Tyneside on fire since joining from Aston Villa, but his improved contribution in recent weeks suggests that it may be worth extending his loan until the end of the season at least.
But Zurab Khizanishvili has been in and out of the squad, and Hughton may be considering whether the wages being spent on him might be best used strengthening elsewhere.
