Leon Best: I'll prove my worth in NUFC shirt

LEON BEST has stated he aims to walk the walk before talking the talk at Newcastle United. The 23-year-old arrives at Newcastle on a mission to add to his 10-goal tally for the season and quickly stated his desire to help take Newcastle back the promised land. And in a business-like interview with the Chronicle, Best’s professional attitude was evident as he paid respect to former Toon strikers like Alan Shearer, Les Ferdinand and Tino Asprilla – and admitted only hard work will allow him to emulate them. Tellingly, Best has already set himself the challenge of winning the right to wear the famous No 9 shirt at Newcastle, graced by legends such as Shearer, Wor Jackie, Supermac and Sir Les during much brighter days on Tyneside. Story continues ADVERTISEMENT Best told the Chronicle: “I will be wearing the No 20 shirt. “The No 9 shirt would have been great – but that is a shirt at this club that has to be earned. “You can’t just show up, pick it up and throw it on your back. “It’s a privilege that has to be earned. That’s absolutely right and correct. “If you wear the No 9 shirt at Newcastle it must be earned on achievement and nothing else.”
