Jose Enrique’s warning to Championship rivals

Nov 25 2009

by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle

Jose Enrique

JOSE ENRIQUE has warned the rest of the Championship they face a fight to wrestle the leadership of the second tier from Newcastle United.

Next up for the Magpies are promotion hopefuls Swansea City at St James’ Park, but the Spaniard has revealed Newcastle are ready to make another statement to the division after maintaining their six-point cushion in the automatic promotion places with their win at Preston.

The three points also increased the gap between United and the last play-off place to nine points.

And while West Brom beat Bristol City 4-1 to stay hot on Newcastle’s heels, they now face a testing trip to Sheffield Wednesday, while United tackle consecutive home games against the Swans and Watford.

Enrique has vowed to increase United’s control at the top.

He said: “The most important thing was that we won at Preston, because Leicester and West Brom won their games at the weekend.

“We won, and we’re top of the table, which is a good feeling for the players, but we have many games to go.

“We’re not worried about West Brom – we only worry about ourselves.”

Enrique recalls that two of United’s earlier home games against QPR and Bristol City saw them lose four points.

However, Newcastle remain at the top of the pile with an unbeaten home record to boot.

The Spanish star added: “The problem is us, not the other teams.

“If we win our games, we stay top of the table, and we have to think like that.

“We’re at the top of the league, and now we have two games at home against Swansea and Watford.

“It’s very important for us to win these two games and stay where we are.

“It’s a real opportunity.

“The games at home are very important, and if we play the same in the next two games, then I think we can win.”
