Jonas: Coloccini will help to shore up defence

Jonas suffered his own injury problems earlier in the season when he was dogged by a hamstring issue, and feels that United’s paper-thin squad has been pushed to the limit this season.

He said: “It’s a problem we have had. Colo, Tayls, Danny Simpson, Joey Barton, Shola and me – we’ve had a lot of injured players, and we don’t have a big squad.

“That’s a real problem sometimes.

“Some players are coming again, so that is good for the team.

The Argentine winger also dismissed weekend speculation linking him with a move to Serie A giants Roma by revealing he is fully focused on helping to take Newcastle back to the Premier League this term.

And with United knowing that nothing but victory will hand them back the Coca-Cola Championship leadership at Bramall Lane, Jonas was in confident mood today.

Looking ahead to tonight’s clash with the Blades, he said: “It’s another hard game.

“Away from home, they are more hard for us because all the teams want to beat us.

“It will be a physical game.

“We know that, and the most important thing for us is to try and keep a clean sheet, and to keep the ball the most time we can.

“If we do that, the other team has to run more than us.

“I think we started the season very well home and away.

“If you look at the last five games, they were more difficult.

“We have had injuries, so that has been a problem, but we can take confidence into this game.

“We have to do the right things to take the three points.”
