JOEY BARTON has revealed his hunger to play a part in Newcastle United’s tilt at the Coca-Cola Championship title.
The Scouse midfielder will be in competitive action tonight at Hartlepool United in a reserve-team run-out as he bids to star in the United first team for the first time since last September.
Barton’s season was decimated by a foot operation last autumn which has meant the former Manchester City ace has cut a frustrated figure in the stands at St James’ Park.
But any fears that Barton has been a disruptive influence in the United camp have been allayed.
The Huyton-born player was on Teesside on Saturday to roar on his team-mates from the stands, and in the recent FA Youth Cup games for the Academy, Barton has been there in support of the club’s youngsters.
And he even made an appearance in the dressing before and after the win over Crystal Palace to offer words of encouragement.
Barton said today: “I just want to focus on playing football now.
“The team have done a great job this season, and so have Chris Hughton, Colin Calderwood and the rest of the backroom lads.
“Now I just want to get back and play a part in helping this team back into the Premier League.”
