Hughton focuses solely on Peterborough win

Mar 31 2010

by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle

Chris Hughton

CHRIS HUGHTON today insisted he is open-minded about how Newcastle United succeed at Peterborough on Saturday providing they complete part one of the task set by he and his backroom team.

Hughton has diverted thoughts about completing the job of promotion on Saturday away from his team.

Instead, he has simply set the target of beating Posh to put themselves in with a real shout of sealing a Premier League place in front of Toon fans at Sheffield United on Easter Monday, with two wins guaranteed to bring back top-flight action to Tyneside next season.

United know they can clinch promotion with victory combined with defeat for Nottingham Forest at Bristol City.

However, Hughton said today: "If it happens, it happens.

Its a game we want to win and we know there is more than one way to win.

"If were able to take some of the form from Forest into the game, were in with a good chance.

"But let's get the win first and take things from there afterwards."

United will take 4,100 fans to London Road on Saturday and memories of the Magpies' last league visit to Posh in 1992 are bound to be evoked.

Back then, a 1-0 win in front of 7,000 travelling United fans was one of the highlights of the 92/93 season.

Hughton said: What they want is for us to win football matches, and to be excited.

I dont think theres anybody who wouldnt have seen Monday as a really exciting game.

"It became very open in the end, and we had to defend very well.

It was a great atmosphere.

What I felt was that it would be difficult for Forest to sustain it. They worked really hard from the front.

When the game opens up, you never know if you will get your goals."
