Caldwell is currently picking up £9,000 per week at Celtic, and if he is to stay he he would be looking for a vast improvement, thought to be around double his current salary.
And while the days of players winning astronomical contracts at Newcastle seem over under the Mike Ashley regime, Caldwell’s demands could be a drop in the ocean compared to those of potential summer signings should the Mags win back their top-flight status.
Caldwell failed to break into the Toon team as a kid and spent time on loan at Darlington, Hibernian, Coventry and Derby.
A permanent move to Hibs in 2004 elevated Caldwell’s status and won him a transfer to Celtic in 2006 where he became a cult figure, winning two SPL titles and Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup gongs.
Speaking on his future in September, Caldwell said: “I need to know what is happening.
“If the contract runs out, it runs out. That’s life, and you have to move on.
“It’s something the club will have the answers to, as I don’t know.”
Meanwhile, Hughton has confirmed that Fabrice Pancrate, a 29-year-old winger, has been at Newcastle on trial but the club have yet to decide on whether to make him an offer.
The former Paris St Germain and Real Betis player also had trials with Sheffield United this season but the Blades decided against a move for the free agent.
