Fabrice Pancrate: Wonder goal is just the start

Dec 7 2009

by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle

Fabrice Pancrate

FABRICE PANCRATE today defiantly warned the rest of the Coca-Cola Championship "there's much more where that came from" after his wonder goal against Watford.

Indeed, Pancrate has claimed he’s scored BETTER goals – and can’t wait to take on Coventry City and Barnsley in what will be a decisive week for the Magpies and their quest for promotion.

The former Paris Saint-Germain man was still buzzing after scoring what many feel was United’s goal of the season so far. But, more importantly, his superb strike sealed another three points to mean that United are still lording it at the top of the table.

Few fans had heard of Pancrate when he arrived as a free agent last month and sceptics wondered why United had gambled in signing the 29-year-old after he’d been snubbed by Burnley and Sheffield United.

But there were no complaints when he wriggled his way through the Hornets defence before delivering the killer blow to the plucky Hertfordshire side’s chances of snatching a point against 10-man United, whose numbers were reduced by Kevin Nolan’s red card.

Pancrate told the Chronicle today: “Theres’s more where that came from.

“It was maybe my best goal, though I scored an acrobatic one for PSG.

“Technically, it was good as I held the ball up and used my right foot to check on to my left.

“When it hit the bar it was the best feeling, as it looked better!”

However, after winning a place in the hearts of Toon fans, Pancrate admitted that seeing St James’ Park erupt was one of the best feelings of his career.

He said: “It was my first goal at St James’ Park, and it was a magical moment for me.

“I knew there were two players against me.

“I took a beautiful touch inside, and I didn’t even think about it – I just hit it as hard as I could with my left foot.

“If I get on the pitch, the fans are unbelievable, and when I touch the ball, they’re unbelievable!

“When I scored the goal, they were even more unbelievable, so I’m very happy.”

Newcastle players’ emotions were a mixture of jubilation and relief as they filed out of the ground on Saturday night, but Pancrate, Jose Enrique, Fabricio Coloccini and Jonas Gutierrez were the last to leave the United dressing room and staged a mini party, with salsa music pumping down the corridors of St James’ Park.

Reflecting on the post-game party, Pancrate says: “I had massive emotions after the game.

“We were struggling after the red card – they were having the better of the game – but I got a goal, and it made everybody happier.

“It was difficult.

“I had warmed up at half-time, but had to wait to come on.

“By the time I came on, we were under pressure.

“I found it difficult. I wanted to go forward, but I had to look after what was happening behind me as well.”
