Clean-living Harper is getting ready to put shirt on Magpies
Mar 20 2010
Steve Harper is 90 minutes from claiming a Newcastle United record from a friend who has been there, done that and got the T-shirt. Stuart Rayner reports
THE name Newcastle United conjures images of passionate fans, hell-for-leather attacking and comical defending.
Some 129 years of football history cannot be so easily encapsulated into sweeping generalisations but nevertheless, the Magpies’ longest-serving player is finding it disconcerting to hear so many nice things about his club’s miserly defensive unit.
So much so that Steve Harper seems to have got a little giddy and made a promise he is already starting to regret to the man whose clean-sheets record he could take tonight.
Czech goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek was a bit of a joke figure when he swapped Banik Ostrava for Newcastle in 1991 but went on to claim the club’s clean-sheet record and lifelong cult status. A shut-out at Ashton Gate today, or in any of the nine other matches remaining this season, and Harper will claim the former, if not the latter.
The man from Easington could celebrate with his own tribute to Srnicek after a tongue-in-cheek remark to his St James’ successor backfired.
At the end of the 1992-93 season United secured promotion to the top-flight – thanks in no small part to 18 clean sheets. Srnicek celebrated by wearing a T-shirt daubed with the legend that was already a popular terrace chant and is now the name of a Facebook appreciation society – “Pavel is a Geordie”.
