CHRIS Hughton admits he wants new additions to his Newcastle United squad “sooner rather than later.”
The Magpies’ Barclays Premier League rivals Birmingham, Sunderland and Wolves have all been active in the transfer market – confounding expectations that there would be no recruitment until after the conclusion of the World Cup.
Hughton is not concerned about the lack of arrivals at St James’ Park but admits that he’d like to have new players in as close as possible to the start of pre-season training on July 5.
He said: “We are aware of what is happening elsewhere, but I am not going to set any kind of deadline for bringing players in.
“What I would say is we want to bring in players as early as possible so we can work with them during pre-season, but with some of the players we are looking at that may not be possible.”
With cash tight at St James’ Park, Hughton wants to use the loan market to bolster his squad.
He has targeted Manchester City’s World Cup winger Vladimir Weiss as well as Manchester United pair Danny Wellbeck and Tom Cleverly.
Most top-flight clubs do not make decisions on who will be made available on loan until later in the summer, though – meaning United fans may face a frustrating wait for new arrivals.
Hughton added: “I am aware supporters want to hear names, but my attitude is the best way of doing business is the quiet way.”
