CHRIS HUGHTON has revealed that Newcastle United will pick from “three or four” top-level Continental sides to provide the opposition for their final two pre-season friendly slots.
United are lining up two European trips to complete their pre-season preparations – with Hughton targeting tough games to bring his troops up to speed.
Deportivo La Coruna claimed over the weekend that they would be taking on United on August 3, but with Newcastle still putting the finishing touches to their friendly schedule it looks like they may have jumped the gun.
“I know there are still two games to be confirmed and I have seen a list with three or four possibilities on it and they are top, top class European sides,” Hughton said.
“That is what I would like, a couple of high profile friendlies that will really test us. It is really important that we get the right opposition for the last two games.
“We go to Carlisle and then to Norwich in the early stages and I would anticipate big crowds for both those games, which will get us back into the swing of things.
“Then we would like a step up the closer we get to the start of the season.”
Deportivo posted a notice on their website over the weekend saying United would be the opponents for their annual Trofeo Teresa Herrera match.
“Next week, Deportivo de la Coruna will officially notify that this year’s Trofeo Teresa Herrera will be played for in a game between Deportivo and Newcastle United,” it read.
“All that remains outstanding is final confirmation from the English club, the team of former Deportivo player Fabricio Coloccini.”
