CHRIS Hughton insists he will leave the celebrating to the Newcastle United supporters until his side are assured of promotion.
In front of a huge St James’ Park crowd United took a giant leap towards the top flight with an impressive 2-0 defeat of third-placed Nottingham Forest courtesy of a pair of classy goals from substitute Shola Ameobi and Jose Enrique.
It means that Newcastle could clinch promotion to the Premier League on Saturday if they beat rock-bottom Peterborough United and Forest, who have lost seven successive away games, lose at Bristol City.
Newcastle boss Hughton accepted that it was a “big win” for his side last night.
However, he added that he continues to take nothing for granted – and that his coaching staff will not be taking champagne with them on the train to Peterborough just in case.
“It was a big one for us but I’m not celebrating yet,” Hughton said.
“It will be a nice day at the training ground today and everyone will have a spring in their step but we very quickly have to bring them down to earth.
“It’s a difficult away game on Saturday that we have got to prepare correctly for.
“I think because of the timing of the result it was big – we’re so close to the end of the season and it was against a side that have pushed us all season so, yes it was an important win. I know it’s that close. We thoroughly deserve to be where we are and if it happens on Saturday, I’ll be more delighted than I was last night.
