Carroll faces race to be fit for Peterborough

Mar 30 2010

by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle

Andy Carroll

CHRIS HUGHTON was today assessing the damage to Andy Carrolls ankle ahead of Saturdays potentially decisive promotion clash with Peterborough United.

The England Under-21 striker picked up a first-half ankle injury on the heavy St James Park surface and failed to run it off at the start of the second half following some treatment at the interval.

And Hughton feels the 16-goal top scorer could be touch and go for the clash with Posh.

He told the Chronicle today: Hes just rocked his ankle. Hes done that in the past, and he has recovered, so I dont expect it to be too serious.

Well assess that one this week.

At this moment, I dont know about Peterborough.

However, Hughton has no qualms about Carrolls replacement last night in Shola Ameobi, who will also be the leading contender to step into the breach against Posh.

He said: Shola came up trumps.

Its no surprise hes an excellent finisher.

Its disappointing for us and for him that hes missed out on so much football this season.

Im quite sure, if he had played the games the others have, he would be right up with them in the goalscoring stakes.

Hughton has also revealed his delight at seeing off a team many believed were capable of finishing ahead of the Magpies at certain stages of the season.

He added: It was such a big game, and you try and play the game down beforehand.

At the end of the day its still three points.

We got three points at Doncaster, and were they any more important?

Well, because of how good Forest are, they were three big points for us.

They gave us a real fright and made it very, very difficult for us, but we always felt it would be difficult for them to sustain the tempo they had in closing us down for 90 minutes.
