James Milner insisted he was enjoying getting to grips with Newcastle United's new 4-3-3 system after playing his part in the Intertoto Cup victory over Dubnica.
On Saturday, Milner was playing on the right side of a front three, with Alan Shearer the main attacker and Charles N'Zogbia on the left.
The Magpies' breakthrough came courtesy of the England Under-21 international's 72nd-minute corner, which Shearer buried for the first of his two goals.
Milner said: "It is still pre-season and we knew it was not going to be an easy game.
They have a few good players and showed they could pass it around but we managed to get a couple of goals, keep a clean sheet and get some fitness out of it.
"We had a few chances but we knew if we kept probing, with the quality we have, we were going to score a goal. It was a good result in the end and a job well done.
"Al scored two great goals. We have great headers of the ball like Al, Jean Alain Boumsong and Steven Taylor and you are not going to bet against them winning the ball in the air. As long as you get the ball in the right area, more often than not you are going to get a chance to score a goal."
Milner added: "We are still getting to grips with the 4-3-3 system - when to come in, when to support Al and when to get wide - but I am getting more involved, which suits us."
Graeme Souness and his team travel to Spain tomorrow ahead of Wednesday's semi-final first-leg against Deportivo La Coruna.
Milner said: "Coruna are a quality side. It is going to be a tough game and a tough week but that is what pre-season is all about. You have to knuckle down and get some fitness out of it.
"If we can put results together against ood teams in this tournament then maybe we can start the Premiership on a roll, kick on and have a great start to the season."
