Graeme Souness is toying with the idea of going back to his old club Blackburn Rovers for their Aussie international winger Brett Emerton. With Laurent Robert on his way out of St James' Park, United are left without anyone who wants to play out wide apart from young James Milner - and Emerton can play on both left and right. Souness actually stole Emerton from under the noses of United in the summer of 2003 in a £2.5m deal from Feyenoord. And it's no coincidence that since Souness left Ewood Park in September, Emerton has lost his way a bit. I understand that if United were to make a bid for the 26-year-old Aussie which would see Blackburn get their money back they would accept it. The word on the soccer grapevine is that United have been locked in talks with an agent who handles all the top Australian players. Aussie man-of-the-moment Tim Cahill is a non-starter and this leaves Emerton and Lucas Neill at Blackburn Rovers. But with Stephen Carr doing OK at right-back, it would surprise me if Souness was interested in Neill. The Blackburn pair are actually in action for Australia in their friendly with New Zealand at Loftus Road tonight. And they then head off to the other side of the world to represent Australia in the Confederation Cup which does not finish until the end of June. Meanwhile, Blackburn were linked with Robert today, but I am told that this is off the mark and rules out any exchange deal. Blackburn say that the only signing they want to make is a striker, but I get the impression that they have given up on Craig Bellamy. Of course, Blackburn manager Mark Hughes was Bellamy's boss when he was in charge of Wales but, with respect to everyone at Ewood Park, I know the fiery striker is looking for a bigger club. |
