On the pitch Toon midfield star Kieron Dyer is always ready to go on the attack. But on the road, he seems to be turning towards defensive driving in a big way. The 25-year-old Newcastle and England man has bought a Hummer H2, based on the US army's Humvee, to add to his two high-performance cars. Although a monster vehicle, the Hummer is not built for speed. Instead, it is a civilian version of the high-mobility multi-purpose vehicle. The beast is also a favourite with Governor of California and Terminator star Arnold Schwarzenegger. Maybe the change of motoring style has something to do with the star's two speeding bans and two lucky crash escapes in the space of just four years. His new motor, bearing the plate K13 DYR and described by a club insider as "humongous", is 6ft 10in wide, 14ft 6in long and 7ft tall. It cost £55,000, does 10 miles to the gallon and needs £90 worth of fuel to fill its tank. It will certainly be a change from the classic £167,000 Aston Martin Vanquish he already owns and from the £103,000 Ferrari he wrote off in December 2002 when he spun out of control on Newcastle's Swing Bridge. The previous year his £50,000 Mercedes hit another car in Chester-le-Street. In that crash, Dyer suffered cuts and bruises and the other driver was left with head injuries. In May last year, he received his second speeding ban after clocking up his fourth motoring breach in two years. He was banned for six months after being caught doing 63mph in a 50mph zone. He was also banned for two months in July 2001 or speeding. |
