Newcastle's incredible comeback from three goals down was wrecked by a late Liverpool goal which ended the Magpies' Academy play-off hopes.
The Reds surged into a 3-0 lead by half time as the Magpies struggled for a foothold. Mattone Awang scored from a Michael Scott pass after 12 minutes, and 17 minutes later Scott converted Michael Collins' cross with a near-post header after a defensive mix-up.
Ben Parsonage made it 3-0 with an angled shot moments before half time, leaving United looking dead and buried. But a host of tactical changes worked like a charm with United level at 3-3 by the 60th minute.
Callum Little planted a brilliant 15-yard scissor-kick past David Roberts on 54 minutes. Then Ryan Donaldson struck twice in three minutes, tapping in a low Cavener cross at the far post before going clear from Francis' flick to round Roberts and slide home.
But after 75 minutes Liverpool got fresh wind and 10 minutes from time regained the lead when substitute Charlie Barnett's 25-yard drive took a wicked deflection off Patterson and wrong-footed Mark Cook.
United coach Kenny Wharton said: "We came all the way back so well, and should have gone on to win. We made the changes to get hold of the middle of the park, and we really did get hold of it.
"But having got back to 3-3 we missed great chances and their winner was a body-blow."
