Taylor: My debt to Becks

Aug 22 2007

by Alan Oliver, Evening Chronicle

DAVID BECKHAM has taken Steven Taylor under his wing ahead of the Newcastle United defender’s full international call-up in tonight’s friendly with Germany at Wembley.

And Beckham's successor as England captain – John Terry – has also been giving the Newcastle United defender advice and encouragement ahead of tonight’s game.

The Chronicle has been predicting through the summer that Taylor would get his full call-up and revealing that Steve McClaren bracketed him in the same mould as Terry.

And Taylor has been delighted that Terry and Beckham have gone out of their way to welcome him into the England set-up.

In an exclusive interview with the Chronicle, Taylor said today: “David Beckham and John Terry have been fantastic.

“They both came over and spoke to me on the first day. Becks gave me advice about being in the England squad, and he's been really helpful. He said it’ll only help me become a better player.

“John Terry’s been giving me tips and encouragement, which is brilliant. He’s one of my idols.

“It’s been a great experience for me, and I’ve already learnt a lot.”

McClaren, who has watched Taylor come through the ranks, has been a regular visitor to St James’ Park since he took over from Sven-Goran Eriksson.

And he told me today: “Steven Taylor typifies the spirit I want to see all the way through Team England.”

McClaren has also taken the time to speak to Taylor since he linked up with England on Monday and Stuart Pearce has told the United defender he will be his skipper should he become available again for the Under-21 side.

Taylor has 18 England Under-21 caps – and scored four goals – and he will be watched at Wembley tonight by his mother and father who flew down to Stansted from Newcastle today.

Sam Allardyce will watch the game on TV as he has stayed on Tyneside to finally tie up the £2m transfer of Abdoulaye Faye from Bolton.

And while he is still trying to find a keeper to put pressure on Shay Given and Steve Harper, Faye will probably be United’s last buy in the current transfer window.
