Pearson is set to land England job

Jan 29 2007

By Alan Oliver, The Evening Chronicle

Newcastle United have given the green light for their-first team coach Nigel Pearson to take over a similar role with the England Under-21 side.

While there are mutterings of discontent coming out of the North West about Manchester City manager Stuart Pearce taking over from Peter Taylor as the Under-21 boss, there is no problem at St James' Park.

Even City chairman John Wardle has expressed his concern about his manager spending time with the England Under-21 side.

But United boss Glenn Roeder told me today: "When the Football Association's Trevor Brooking approached me about Nigel while I was doing my Pro-Licence at Warwick University last week, I told him straight away it wasn't a problem for us.

"I consider it an honour for Nigel Pearson and an honour for Newcastle United to be associated with the England Under-21 squad, if that is what the FA are going to announce."

Roeder is a former England coach, and he added: "The FA obviously remember all the good work Nigel did when he was with the England Under-18 and Under-19 sides.

"And I must say, with Pearce and Pearson in charge, there will be no late-night parties for the young England players."

Obviously Pearson will have to spend a little bit of time away from the United training base, but Roeder is a coach and he is heavily involved in this aspect of United's preparations.

And Roeder obviously feels that having his No 2 working with England's best young players is beneficial if it ever comes to trying to bring them to St James' Park.

Pearson worked with Curtis Davies at West Brom and I understand that, had United been able to come up with the money, the young defender would have jumped at the chance to join his former boss on Tyneside.
