Keegan's new blood vow for Toon

Feb 1 2008

by Alan Oliver, Evening Chronicle

Kevin Keegan

KEVIN KEEGAN kept his powder dry in the January transfer window.

But he promised “There are exciting times ahead in the summer.”

This is a clear reference to the fact that the United boss intends to be busy in the close season, mainly bringing new players in but probably also letting some go.

And United supporters need only think back to the summer of 1995 when Keegan brought in Warren Barton and Les Ferdinand on successive days early in June and gave the fans a month to savour this before throwing David Ginola at them.

Keegan hopes that by bringing in new blood it will stop the likes of Charles N’Zogbia eyeing the bright lights of London.

The Chronicle reported yesterday that Spurs were ready to make a move for United’s French midfielder, and at first this was denied by White Hart Lane.

This denial was later rescinded, but it is likely that, having failed yesterday, Spurs will be back for N’Zogbia in the summer.

As it happens, the one departure was Czech defender David Rozehnal on loan to Lazio just a couple of hours after he attacked Keegan in a newspaper back in his own country.

Keegan had told me at the Emirates on Tuesday night that he could not afford to let any of his first-team squad go.

But I have the feeling we have seen the last of Rozehnal, who for me did not have the physical presence for the hurly-burly of the Premier League.

The Chronicle revealed on Tuesday that United were bringing an Italian teenager from Atalanta – and Fabio Zamblera is now here on a four-year deal.

He is regarded as a striker, but European scouts tell me that he can also play in midfield.

The 17-year-old, who was born in Trescore Balneario, has never figured in Serie A, but he has represented Italy at both Under-17 and Under-16 levels.

United have also signed 17-year old keeper Ole Soderberg from Swedish club BK Hacken.
