Can Toon reject be reborn in the USA?

May 22 2007

By Lee Ryder, The Evening Chronicle

From Kingston Park and Newcastle United reserves to David Beckham and Los Angeles Galaxy . . .

It's hardly a well-trodden path - but for Geordie defender Phil Cave it's a dream scenario that could prove to be a reality.

Cave flies over to California on Friday for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that could see him linking up with Becks and Co when the England legend makes his debut for Galaxy later this year.

However, the 20-year-old knows he will have to go all-out to impress before then in a special trial conducted by former Ipswich Town star Frank Yallop and US hero and former Serie A defender Alexi Lalas.

But should he make it through the trial, the young Tynesider, who is used to appearing at the wind-swept Kingston Park against the second strings of Blackburn and Everton, may well earn a move to the Home Depot Center - the stadium which sometimes includes the likes of celebrity fans Jennifer Lopez, 50 Cent, Samuel L Jackson and Donald Trump in the crowd.

On the field, Cave could line up alongside American star players Landon Donavan and 164-times capped Cobi Jones.

Galaxy have twice won the Major League since it began in 1996, but with the impending arrival of Beckham for the next five years and former Middlesbrough and Portugal defender Abel Xavier, hopes are high they can begin a monopoly across the pond.

And it is a new revolution that Cave would love to be part of.

Cave, who never played a first-team game for United after progressing through the ranks, told the Chronicle: "It is a fantastic opportunity, which my agent has helped set up, and I will have to see what happens out there.

"I intend to take a holiday there with my girlfriend, but the trial will be arranged for a few days and I will just take it from there.

"The Major League Soccer is picking up again in the States and a lot of big names are beginning to head over there.

"It is exciting and the chance to be in the same team as David Beckham is an unbelievable one.

"The standard of living is also fantastic, it would be amazing."

Cave would be swapping cold, wet nights playing for United's reserves for the sun-drenched climate of California and its palm trees and sandy beaches, with Hollywood just a skip away.

Yet Cave isn't getting carried away and knows that his future could still lie in England in the lower reaches of the Football League.

Scunthorpe United are also interested in the player and, after a recent trial match, Iron coaches were astonished to discover he was yet to play in the first team.

Cave has also attracted interest from Darlington and their No 2 Martin Gray, who rates the player highly.

And with the TFM Darlington Arena club prepared to offer him a chance next season too, the future of Cave in football is far, far from over after his release from United.

He added: "The idea would be to play down in the lower leagues in the Football League and then work my way back up.

"It's been proven in football that if you shine in League One or Two, people take an interest.

"I'm at the stage of my career when I am ready for first-team football after playing for the reserves at Newcastle."
