Citroen is ideally placed to take advantage of the current financial situation with its wide range encompassing city cars, superminis and compact models.

These are in addition to small, medium and large MPVs, convertible cars and a crossover 4x4 range.

The Citroen C1 is among the most affordable models on the market, starting from just £7,945 for the one-litre VT model. There are also diesels on offer with economy of more than 60mpg in the case of the 1.4 HDi.

The C2 range also comes with a choice of petrol and diesel engines and prices from £9,245.

The range includes a 1.4-litre petrol model with stop&start technology that results in economy of 50mpg although the 1.4-litre diesel model raises that to 65mpg.

The C3 is bigger again although still only in the compact class and comes with a similar choice of relatively small capacity, low polluting and high economy engines.

Prices start at £10,145 for the entry-level 1.1i VT version, rising through £12,645 for the 1.4i stop&start up to £13,245 for the flagship 1.6-litre diesel.

Two other versions of the C3 include the open Pluriel and the MPV Picasso.

The Pluriel can be driven as a conventional hard top model or as a convertible with the roof down whilst the Picasso is a state-of-the-art MPV.

Rising even further up the extensive range is the C4, which comes as a coupe or hatchback, with prices from £13,295 for the latter.

Included in the C4 range are petrol engines of 1.4 and 1.6 litres plus diesel units of 1.6 and 2.0 litres.

Economy varies from 44mpg for the 1.4-litre petrol model to virtually 65mpg for the 1.6-litre diesel.

The same 1.6-litre engine is also to be found beneath the bonnet of the even larger C5 saloon and estate models, together with further options of 1.8 and 2.0 litre petrol units and optional oil burners of 2.0 and 2.2 litres.

Prices of the saloon start at £16,695 or from £17,695 for the estate.

The C6 is Citroen's executive model, taking prices up to £35,000 while the Berlingo offers unrivalled versatility from £10,895 for the First version and from £11,385 for the Multispace, which has the option of seven seats.

The Pluriel can be driven as a conventional hard top model or as a convertible with the roof down.
