It is very easy to assume that the £2,000 Scrappage scheme is the maximum amount you may expect to have a new car reduced by, but that is not the case.
Take Volkswagen for example. They have announced some additional contributions to the Government's car Scrappage scheme on models across their range.
Some will receive a reduction of more than double the Government's two grand.
If you buy a Volkswagen Golf S model you will get a total saving of £3,950 on diesel engines or a saving of £3,250 on petrol engines.
This means you can now buy a new Golf S 1.4 80PS 3dr from £10,825. Other models in the range, such as the Golf SE, GT, GTI and GTD, will continue to get the standard £2,000 Scrappage scheme incentive.
A total saving of £3,250 is available on all Golf Estate, Golf Plus and Touran models.
The Golf continues to be one of the nation's favourite cars. There really is something for everyone within its range.
The GTi has become something of an icon, as has its diesel stablemate, the GTD. Both are terrific fun and offer a perfect blend of sporty handling and performance, yet maintain a comfortable ride.
The GTD's combination of 0-60mph in 8.1 seconds while offering a potential of 53.3mpg takes some beating. Under the Scrappage scheme the GTD will cost £20,450, while the quicker but thirstier GTi will start at £21,015.
Volkswagen is also offering a total of £4,250 off all models in the Passat range, including Saloon, Estate and extremely stylish CC. This means you can buy a new Passat Saloon from £12,750.
The Bluemotion model is particularly attractive because it produces a meager 128g/km CO2 emissions figure, putting it in the lowest bracket for company car tax.
And, thanks to various engineering tweaks and low-resistance tyres, average fuel economy is approaching 60mpg.
If you want to buy a new car without spending a fortune, then the VW Fox hatchback is worthy of consideration. When the Scrappage scheme is taken into account, it drops in price to just above £5,000.
