IF you need a vehicle capable of putting in a hard day’s work but still value some of the finer qualities in life, the Nissan Navara could be just what you’re looking for.

For despite this beefy pick-up’s rugged, ready-for-action appearance and performance credentials, it is packed with creature comforts more normally associated with a saloon car.

For example, the leather seats can be heated, there is dual zone climate control, sat nav, rain-sensing wipers, cruise control, automatic headlights, an electric sunroof and plenty more.

From the second you lay eyes on the Navara, you just know it’s going to be fun to drive.

The massive wheels can deal with any terrain and there is optional four-wheel-drive as and when required. Other external features include privacy glass, roof rails, side steps and smart 17-inch alloys.

Admittedly, the diesel-powered engine is not the quietest I’ve ever experienced, but the main surprise came in the Navara’s handling. I expected it to be a lot heavier to manoeuvre and even quite cumbersome, but it proved deceptively agile.

It’s a fact you wouldn’t want to be doing too many three point turns in a congested area in the Navara, but out on the faster roads it easily held its own with faster moving traffic.

The 2.5-litre engine delivered plenty of power and the six speed manual transmission was nice and smooth.

The driver benefits from excellent all-round visibility and all passengers in the double-cab model that I tested are treated to ample leg, head and elbow space.

The Navara’s massive open back means you can transport almost anything and there are numerous handy storage options inside the cabin.

There is a real fun-factor to the Navara. Okay, it’s a working vehicle in principle, but it offers so much more. The gentle rumble of the engine, the steps up to the cabin, the tinted windows all add to its appeal.

And as one would expect Nissan has fitted the Navara with a very comprehensive list of safety specifications, including anti-lock brakes, with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist, stability control, active headrests, numerous airbags and an alarm and immobiliser to keep away any uninvited attention.

The Navara may not be the greenest vehicle on the road or the most fuel efficient, but it has a defined market and plenty of cross segment appeal too - watch out the multi-purpose vehicle.
