Lots of favours

Cookies, cup cakes and chocolates ... mmm! Catherine Begg and Vicky Begley have a fabulous array of Truly Scrumptious edible favours for you to choose from for your special day. Sarah Dale meets the creative sisters to find out more.

Catherine Begg wants something that little bit different for the favours for her wedding.

"I didn't want the traditional five sugared almonds in a little bag," says Catherine, from Middlesbrough.

"I saw some cookies in a magazine and thought that was a good idea but couldn't find anyone who did them up here.

"I liked the idea of having cookies or cup cakes or chocolates, something that looked pretty on the tables but that guests would eat and not just discard."

Finding exactly what she was looking for began to prove tricky so Catherine, 27, and her sister, Vicky Begley, 30, decided to make their own.

"And from there we thought we could do this for other people too," says Vicky, from Ingleby Barwick.

"I had the traditional sugared almonds in a little bag for the women and top hat boxes with mints in them for the men for my wedding. They were really pretty but they just get put away in a cupboard or left on the table at the reception."

Vicky and Catherine set up Truly Scrumptious in September last year. It is a sideline business for the sisters at the moment; Vicky works part-time for an accountancy firm and Catherine is in freelance marketing.

The sisters' mum, Barbara, has always enjoyed making cakes.

"Catherine's wedding cake will be my last one before I retire," says Barbara, from Nunthorpe, Middlesbrough.

"I always made the girls' birthday cakes and have made wedding cakes for friends and family."

The sisters make edible favours including cookies, cup cakes and chocolates.

"We make the cookies and cup cakes but we buy the handmade chocolates in and decorate them ourselves," says Vicky, who has two children, William, seven, and Eve, three.

"We can offer lots of different designs and can match the favours to any theme.

"Couples can choose a cookie tree which consists of a metal rotating tree which can hold up to 120 cookies and can be used instead of a wedding cake.

"It is a nice display and people can just help themselves. They can double up as favours."

Catherine, from Eagle Park in Marton, is having the chocolate variety for her own wedding which takes place in October.

She is marrying her longterm partner, Christopher Fenwick, at Swinton Park, a luxury castle hotel in Masham, North Yorkshire.

The sisters also make special edible treats for other occasions.

"We make cookie bouquets which make really nice birthday presents," says Vicky.

"Instead of a flower bouquet, you could send a cookie bouquet, whether it's to celebrate a birthday, new baby, wedding or anniversary, any occasion."

Cookies start at £2.75 and come in a cellophane wrapper and coordinating ribbon and gift tag if wanted. They can also be packaged in boxes for 50p more each. A cookie bouquet is about £20.

"Cup cake towers can be used as a wedding cake," says Catherine.

"You can have a top cake to cut for the photographs but have a cup cake tower which can be wedding cake and favours in one.

"And for the kids at weddings you could give them a cookie lollipop."

Vicky and Catherine also want to branch out into offering a full table decorating and wedding favour service.

"We would like to offer the whole package," says Vicky.

"We want to decorate the tables and bring the favours and arrange them for the wedding couple."
