“I’VE had race horses named after me, and dogs named after me, but never a kid.” That was Kevin Keegan’s stunned reaction when he met five-year-old Keegan Taylor in 1993, clearly unaware that lots of mini Keegans were making their way into the world. Little Keegan’s mum Jannene, of Gosport, Hampshire, had a massive crush on Kevin ever since she was a teenager, so when she later married Geordie Ian Taylor and fell pregnant, they thought it was the perfect name for their young lad. Keegan, now 21, absolutely loves his name and all things to do with Newcastle United too, even though he lives on the south coast . . . and he’s now the proud owner of a newly printed Keegan shirt. The footy-mad bricklayer said: “I used to get the mickey taken out my name when I was younger but I’ve always loved it, even though it’s led to a few arguments down the pub. “My grandad and auntie live in Newcastle, so I go to a match at least once a year when we come up to visit, and my bedroom wall is covered in Newcastle strips. “The last match I was at was the Alan Shearer testimonial which was just brilliant.” Keegan beats many of his other sporting namesakes because he got to meet the real Kevin Keegan, when the team played Portsmouth at their Fratton Park ground. “Yes, I met the man himself, Lee Clark, Peter Beardsley and the rest of the team although I’m too young to remember much about it.” Jannene added: “My dad arranged for us to meet Kevin and the team as a birthday surprise. “I’ve still got the letter inviting us to meet them all on Newcastle United headed notepaper.” |
