If you’ve had your fill of a commercial Christmas and want to be a consumer with a conscience, then the North-East is the place to be. Britain’s fair trade explosion was sparked in 1979 when Traidcraft, now the UK’s leading fair trade organisation, started life in a small warehouse in Carliol Square in the centre of Newcastle. Since then, other ethical retailers, including Ethicalsuperstore.com and The Honey Tree in Heaton, Newcastle, have sprung up across the area. Story continues ADVERTISEMENT Fair trade is now so mainstream that the Government Office for the North-East has included the medium’s growth in sales as one of its key principles. So this Christmas, if you want to go organic, fair trade or eco-friendly – or all three – look no further.
