Hard work formula for success

Jul 25 2005

By The Evening Chronicle

Students celebrating graduation from the North East's only course in pharmacy services have been praised for their dedication and hard work.

A total of 23 students from across the region successfully completed a two-year BTEC National Certificate in Pharmacy Services at Tyne Metropolitan College in North Tyneside.

The students, who usually have full-time jobs as well, have willingly spent hours travelling to North Tyneside one day a week from as far afield as Teesside for the chance to gain the certificate.

The 2005 group has maintained the course's 100% success record since it started five years ago with every student graduating successfully and going on to employment or further study.

TyneMet lecturer Angela Woodlands said: "I'm really proud of them. This is not an easy course as the students have to complete 41 assignments over the two years.

"Given that they also have full time jobs and can spend hours travelling to the college each week they really deserve their success."

The course is unique in the region and was set up in conjunction with the Pharmacy Education and Training Office for the North East.

Previously, the only option was a correspondence course and the numbers applying to TyneMet are increasing every year.

Joanne Redpath, 28, lives in Middlesbrough and works in James Cook Hospital.

She said: "It has been a challenge but I have really enjoyed it.

"I need the qualification to continue my career in pharmacy and I can now go on to do medicines management as well if I want.

"It has been worth all the hours spent travelling and I'm delighted to have graduated."

Naomi Twist, 26, from Durham, has been working in a local pharmacy.

She already has a degree in psychology and criminology, but chose to study pharmacy after enjoying a holiday job in a branch of Boots.

Now she has won a new job with a leading pharmaceutical company.

She said: "The course has been hard work but it has been really worthwhile.

"Combining the theory with the practical side of my job at the pharmacy was a real benefit."

Some students work as pharmacy technicians in hospitals across the region. Others plan to work in the sector and others to take the course as an entry route to a pharmacy degree.
