Roadtesting the latest beauty products

Feb 3 2008

by Pauline Holt, Sunday Sun

RIMMEL London’s new Mousse Blusher (£4.99) is a fabulously light and airy product that’s easy to apply, even if you’re more used to using powder blushers.

It feels like a soft souffle, but you don’t need much to create a cool effect. The two colours — Peach Ice Tea and Frozen Cherry — are great, very fresh, young and reminiscent of spring, with a fab shimmer effect.

The mousses are enriched with mineral water so they won’t dry your skin, and it should last for around eight hours — COREENA FORD

SOME moisturisers are like a good book . . . you just can’t bear to finish them.

Fibrogene Line Response Nourishing Cream by Darphin, pictured right, is one of those that looks set to enter the bestseller lists. For 40-plus skin like mine, which can be quite dry, it’s an instant plumper-upper and you can feel thirsty pores drinking it in. What’s more, it has a delicate, fresh smell that gets your morning make-up ritual off to a fragrant start.

Founder of the range Pierre Darphin says he began with the philosophy that “pleasure is a critical catalyst to enhancing personal beauty”.

At £44 it doesn’t come cheap, but is in the same price bracket as other upmarket ranges like Clarins. For moisture-starved skins I’d heartily recommend this one, although I have to say forehead lines are yet to respond! Available from Space NK in Newcastle. MORE and more blokes are moisturising these days too. We asked sub-editor JON O’MALLEY to roadtest Nivea’s DNAge moisturiser for men, pictured left. He said: “It was always going to be a big ask . . . rejuvenating the face of an excess-ravaged 42-year-old, even in these days of genetic wizardry and DNA breakthroughs.

“And my blokish ill-discipline when it comes to using a “product” — other than an annual lathering with Lifebuoy — compounds the problem. So it was with some scepticism that I agreed to trial Nivea’s DNAge moisturiser (£15.49).

“Applied twice a day, it claims to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. During my scientific test — applied once a day, intermittently — it proved to be a fine moisturiser, but not a single soul I met asked, ‘Jon, is that really you?’

KNOWN for its healing qualities, tea tree oil has also been hailed for its ability to soothe unsightly break-outs, so I was pleased not to be disappointed by the ultra fresh, clean sensation I got from Lush’s Tea Tree Water toner, (£5.95).

Ideal for everyday use or as a beauty cabinet emergency treatment for blotches and spots — ELEANOR GREGSON
