Adrian Edmondson was born on January 24, 1957, in Bradford. He trained in drama at Manchester University and shot to fame in anarchic comedy The Young Ones. He has since appeared in Filthy, Rich and Catflap, Blackadder Goes Forth, Jonathan Creek and Bottom. Edmondson also directed and starred in the film Guesthouse Paradiso and appeared in the movies The Pope Must Die and The Supergrass. He plays the lead role of Dr Roy Glover in BBC One sitcom Doctors and Nurses. He is married to Jennifer Saunders and they have three daughters: Freya, Beattie and Ella. How much sleep do you need? "More than I get. I think I need eight hours, but since having kids my sleep pattern has been irreversibly altered and now I can only ever manage six or seven." How do you feel first thing in the morning? "I generally feel OK unless I've had spirits the night before." What exercise do you take? "Irregular. When I'm being good I get on the treadmill for half an hour a day." Are you careful about what you eat? "Only inasmuch as I like to get it all in my mouth without spilling." Are you or have you ever been overweight? "On the set of Doctors and Nurses there were these kind of circular slide rule things where you had to put in your weight and your height and it told you what weight category you were in - it told me I was `pre-obese'. People around me pretended to be shocked
which was kind." Do you take vitamin and mineral supplements? "No, I like real food." Do you drink or smoke too much? "Gave up smoking in the late 80s. I have a tendency to drink too much." Do you catch a cold most winters? "Yes. I purposefully try to get a bad one early to build up immunity for the really cold period." What foods can't you bear to eat? "As a kid at home I was known as `The Dustbin'. I ate everything except beetroot." Do you think you suffer from stress? "It's not a problem most of the time, but in times of stress I breathe even more shallowly." Have you ever been in hospital? "As a patient, only as a kid. I fell off my bike and ended up unconscious in the gutter, it was raining so hard I nearly drowned. I was about 11 years old and was kept in for observation." Does your job affect your health? "Yes. I keep meaning to do a little study on blood pressure. I can feel it changing." How often do you consult your doctor? "Having a GP for a friend I consult him quite often. The question I ask him most often is, `another pint'?" Do you look after your skin? "No. I hate ointments." |
