Dr Scott's Surgery

Nov 10 2003

By Dr Mike Scott, The Evening Chronicle

Breasts are wonderfully useful for feeding babies. Here are some good reasons why they are the best method for almost everybody.

Infection. Breast fed babies pick up fewer infections than artificially fed babies. Breast milk actually contains antibodies that immunise the baby against common bugs. This effect lasts after the breast-feeding finishes.

Cot Death is less common in breast fed babies

Allergies seem to be less frequent in breast fed babies. This can be very important if there are problems with asthma, eczema or hay fever in the family.

Convenience. There is no need to sterilise, check the temperatures of the milk or waste time in preparation.

Money - breast milk is free.

Mum's health - less chance of breast cancer in later life and quicker weight loss after delivery.

Long term benefits to the baby - less risk of heart attacks, strokes and diabetes.

Emotional factors - people of all ages seem to enjoy nuzzling breasts and many enjoy having them nuzzled; it leads to closeness.

No mistakes, the breast milk is always the right strength and cannot overload the baby with too much of any ingredient. Extra scoops of the other stuff can lead to dehydration.

I realise that many mums have concerns and worries as to how they can manage with being tied to the baby, not being able to continue long enough when they have to return to work, dad getting left out (he can change the nappies) etc. Health visitors are great here; breast milk is meat and drink to them. The La Leche League is also there to help, for more information call (020) 7242 1278.
